Nestled in the northern reaches of Rwanda, this extraordinary national park is a sanctuary for unique wildlife and a haven for adventurers and nature enthusiasts alike. Join us as we embark on a journey to explore the wonders of Volcanoes National Park.
Volcanoes National Park, locally known as “Parc National des Volcans” (PNV), is a jewel in Rwanda’s conservation efforts. Covering an area of approximately 160 square kilometers (62 square miles), it is part of the Virunga Massif, a chain of volcanic mountains that extends into Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is celebrated for its breathtaking landscapes and its vital role in the protection of the endangered mountain gorillas.
Volcanoes National Park is home to a significant portion of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population. These gentle giants, made famous by the legendary primatologist Dian Fossey, can be encountered in their natural habitat within the park. Observing these magnificent creatures is a profound and humbling experience that leaves an indelible mark on visitors.
Beyond the gorillas, Volcanoes National Park is a sanctuary for diverse wildlife. It is inhabited by various other primate species, including golden monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, and more. The park’s lush rainforests are also home to numerous bird species, making it a birdwatcher’s paradise.

Planning Your Visit
Getting Here
To reach Volcanoes National Park, most travelers fly into Kigali International Airport in Rwanda’s capital, Kigali. From Kigali, you can take a road transfer to the park, enjoying scenic views of the Rwandan countryside along the way.
Best Time to Visit
Volcanoes National Park can be visited year-round, but the dry seasons of December to February and June to September are often considered the best times for gorilla trekking. During these periods, the forest paths are drier and more manageable for trekking, and the gorillas tend to stay closer to the forest edges. However, the park’s wildlife is abundant throughout the year, offering unique experiences in each season.
