  • The Journey

At Glance

Fifteen days that begin in water and end at the ocean. The first three are spent in the Okavango Delta at &Beyond Sandibe, a lodge built among riverine forest on the edge of Moremi, where game drives alternate with mornings poled through the channels by mokoro — the quietest way there is to come across elephant, hippo and the delta’s birdlife. From there the route moves north to Chobe, staying at Chobe Chilwero on the hilltop above the river near Kasane, for three days among the largest elephant population in Africa and the predators of the Savuti and the riverfront.

The second half changes register entirely. Four days in Cape Town cover the Cape Peninsula and the penguin colony at Boulders Beach, the cableway to the top of Table Mountain, and the crossing to Robben Island. The journey then closes on the Overberg coast at De Hoop, where Lekkerwater Beach Lodge sits above a marine reserve regarded as the finest land-based whale watching in the world — and the trip’s May to October window places you there precisely when the southern right whales come inshore to calve. The pace throughout is deliberately relaxed: four bases across fifteen days, with time to settle into each.

Bordering Moremi Game Reserve, Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge is instantly recognisable for its organic, shell-like architecture, inspired by the form of a pangolin and set among riverine forest.

Raised suites look across permanent delta waterways, and the lodge runs largely on solar power with a deliberately light environmental footprint. Game drives and guided walks explore the private concession bordering the reserve.

Day 01• Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta is one of the most beautiful places anywhere in Botswana and it’s also one of the best places in Africa to see wildlife. Elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, hippos, crocs, and so much more are almost guaranteed, while there’s a good chance you’ll also encounter lions, leopards and cheetahs. The trails here follow what little dry land there is in this world of rivers and islands.

Day 02• Traveling in a Mokoro, Okavango Delta

Return to the Okavango Delta for more time looking for wildlife in this unique setting.

Slow down and travel with us at the speed of a dugout canoe poled by a local who knows the waters here better than anyone. Apart from the chance to see elephants, hippos, crocs, and other wildlife, it’s the most romantic way to soak up the silence and explore the Okavango Delta.

Chobe Chilwero sits on a hilltop above the Chobe River near Kasane, its name meaning ‘place of high view’ in the local language, and the outlook across the floodplains is its defining feature.

Private cottages are set within mature gardens, each with its own courtyard. The lodge combines game drives into Chobe National Park with river cruises, and its proximity to the Zimbabwe border makes it a natural pairing with Victoria Falls.

Day 04• Chobe National Park

Welcome to Botswana’s best national park for watching wildlife. Chobe is like an extension of the Okavango Delta, and contains two of Botswana’s most rewarding wildlife areas: Savuti and Chobe Riverfront. Big cats are a real feature in these parts, but it’s the big herds of really big elephants that will provide many of your most memorable sightings.
