Roughly two million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle move in a slow clockwise circuit through the Serengeti and Masai Mara, following rain and grazing. It is the largest overland animal migration on earth, and it never stops — which means there is no single season to see it, only a question of where the herds are and what they are doing when you arrive.
Timing is the whole craft. Calving on the southern short-grass plains falls between January and March, when hundreds of thousands of calves are born within a few weeks and the predator activity is relentless. The Mara River crossings, the images everyone knows, generally run from July into October in the northern Serengeti. Between those, the herds are moving through the western corridor and central plains.
