Kenya FAQ

The questions we’re asked most. For anything else your travel designer is one message away.
Is Kenya good for family safaris?

Kenya is an extraordinary destination for family safaris, blending high-octane adventure with educational and luxury elements tailored for all generations. Many of Kenya’s premium lodges, especially those located in private conservancies (like Laikipia, Lewa, and the Mara conservancies), feature expansive multi-bedroom family villas, private swimming pools, and dedicated family vehicles. Children can participate in customized “Junior Warrior” programs, where local Maasai or Samburu guides teach them ancient bush survival skills, animal tracking, beadwork, archery, and insect identification. Private conservancies also allow for flexible schedules, exciting night drives, and guided bush walks, which are typically restricted in national parks. From feeding Rothschild’s giraffes at Giraffe Manor in Nairobi to watching elephant herds under Mt. Kilimanjaro in Amboseli, Kenya creates lifelong family memories in absolute comfort and safety.

The Great Migration typically arrives in Kenya’s Masai Mara from the Serengeti in late June or July and remains through October. During this period, the grasslands of the Mara are packed with over two million animals, making game viewing incredibly dense and spectacular. The most coveted event is the dramatic Mara River crossing, where wildebeests gather on steep banks before plunging into the rushing waters, dodging giant crocodiles. This thrilling spectacle is best witnessed between August and September. Since this is peak safari season, the main Masai Mara National Reserve can become crowded. To ensure an exclusive, luxury experience, Matta Luxury recommends staying in private conservancies bordering the reserve (such as Mara North, Olare Motorogi, or Naboisho). These private concessions limit vehicle numbers, offer exclusive off-road tracking, and provide private access to the migration river crossing points.

Kenya has fully transitioned from traditional paper and electronic visas to a mandatory digital Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) system. Every traveler, including infants and children, must apply for and secure an approved eTA online through the official government portal before boarding their flight to Kenya. The application should be submitted at least 3 to 14 days prior to travel to allow ample processing time. To apply, you will need a passport valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure date, flight confirmations, lodge booking details, and a credit card for payment. The approved eTA is electronically linked to your passport and is valid for a single entry. If you are planning a multi-country trip combining Kenya with Uganda and Rwanda, you can alternatively apply for the physical East Africa Tourist Visa.

While malaria risk exists across most low-lying safari reserves in Kenya (including the Masai Mara, Amboseli, and Samburu), there are several high-altitude and private conservation areas where the risk is exceptionally low or virtually non-existent. Specifically, the private conservancies of the Laikipia Plateau and Lewa Wildlife Conservancy sit at altitudes above 1,500 to 2,000 meters (5,000+ feet), where cooler temperatures and drier climates significantly limit mosquito activity. This makes them highly attractive for families traveling with toddlers or pregnant women. Regardless of the area, luxury camps take extensive precautions, including mosquito-proofing all tents, providing mosquito nets over king-size beds, spraying rooms during evening turndown, and offering high-strength insect repellents. We still advise all clients to discuss preventative options with their travel physicians.

Scheduled domestic flights (Safarilink, Airkenya) to safari airstrips have a strict limit of 15 kg (33 lbs) per person, including hand luggage. Bags must be soft-sided with no hard frames or wheels to fit in the aircraft’s compact luggage compartments. Excess baggage can be securely stored at our Nairobi office or your gateway hotel. If you have heavy photographic gear, we can pre-book an extra luggage allowance or an additional cargo seat on the aircraft to ensure all your equipment travels with you.

Yes, but these exclusive activities are typically restricted to private wildlife conservancies (such as those in Laikipia, Lewa, and bordering the Masai Mara National Reserve). While national parks have strict regulations prohibiting walking and driving after sunset, private conservancies offer the freedom to step off the vehicle. Guided by armed rangers and tribal trackers, walking safaris allow you to experience the bush at eye level. Night game drives offer a thrilling look at nocturnal predators, like leopards, lions, and bushbabies, hunting under the cover of darkness.

Tap water in Kenya is not safe for drinking. Luxury lodges and camps provide complimentary, unlimited purified bottled water in all guest rooms, safari vehicles, and main dining areas for drinking and brushing teeth. For environmental sustainability, many high-end camps now utilize state-of-the-art reverse osmosis water filtration systems and provide guests with reusable aluminum water bottles to eliminate single-use plastic waste throughout your journey.

Tipping is discretionary but highly appreciated as a reward for outstanding service. For your private safari guide, a tip of US$15 to $20 per day from the group is standard. For general lodge and camp staff (housekeepers, chefs, waitstaff), a tip of US$10 to $15 per day is standard, which can be placed in the communal staff tip box at check-out. Porters and spotters are typically tipped US$2 to $5 per service. Gratuities are best paid in cash (either Kenyan Shillings or crisp, clean US Dollars printed post-2013).

Zambia

Zambia offers Africa’s most authentic walking safaris — the leopard-rich valleys of South Luangwa, canoe trails down the wild Zambezi, and the vast, uncrowded wilderness of Kafue — all without the crowds found elsewhere on the continent.

Seychelles

The Seychelles is an archipelago of 115 pristine islands scattered across the warm Indian Ocean. Known for jaw-dropping beaches framed by giant granite boulders, lush ancient rainforests, and rare endemic wildlife, it represents the absolute peak of private island luxury.

Botswana

Botswana built its tourism around low volumes and high value, and it shows. The Okavango Delta floods the Kalahari each year to create one of Africa’s greatest wildlife stages, while Chobe holds the largest elephant population on earth — all explored from small camps, by mokoro, boat and light aircraft.

Namibia

Namibia is a masterpiece of geological drama. It is a land of massive open spaces, containing the world’s tallest red sand dunes, desolate coastal shipwrecks, a glistening salt pan, and wildlife that has adapted to thrive in the ancient desert sands.

Rwanda

Rwanda is Africa’s premier high-end eco-tourism destination. Pristine, organized, and remarkably scenic, it offers an exclusive gate to the Virunga Volcanoes, lush primate rainforests, and a inspiring story of conservation and national rebirth.

Uganda

Uganda is where the East African savannah meets the deep West African jungle. Home to over half of the world’s mountain gorillas, Uganda offers exceptional primate tracking, dramatic waterfalls, and remote wilderness.

Kenya

Kenya is the classic African dream — endless acacia-studded savannahs, the world’s most dramatic wildlife spectacles, unique northern species, and beautiful white-sand beaches along the warm Indian Ocean.

Tanzania

Tanzania holds the greatest concentration of wildlife on earth — the endless plains of the Serengeti, the caldera of Ngorongoro, and the Great Migration in perpetual motion — ending, if you wish, on the coral coast of Zanzibar.

Zimbabwe pairs one of the world’s great natural wonders, Victoria Falls, with some of Africa’s finest wilderness — Hwange’s vast elephant herds, Mana Pools’ walking safaris along the Zambezi, and the ancient granite hills of Matobo.

South Africa

South Africa is a spectacular mosaic of luxury. It pairs the world’s most luxurious private reserves (famous for close-up predator viewing) with the sophisticated cosmopolitan energy of Cape Town and Michelin-caliber dining in the Cape Winelands.
