The island serves as the main gateway to Seychelles, with its international airport connecting visitors onward to Praslin, La Digue and the archipelago’s more than 100 other islands.
More than a fifth of Mahé is protected within Morne Seychellois National Park, a mountainous expanse of tropical rainforest rising to the island’s highest peak. La Digue is the fourth-largest inhabited island in Seychelles, reached by a short ferry ride from Praslin. Life here moves at a slower pace than elsewhere in the archipelago; bicycles and traditional ox carts remain a common way to get around, with few cars on the island’s quiet roads.
La Digue is best known for Anse Source d’Argent, a beach of powder-soft sand and dramatic pink granite boulders considered one of the most photographed in the world. Nearby, L’Union Estate preserves a former coconut and vanilla plantation alongside a sanctuary for giant Aldabra tortoises, offering a glimpse into the island’s colonial-era history.
Praslin is the second-largest island in Seychelles, roughly a 15-minute flight or one-hour ferry from Mahé. The island is best known for its beaches, including Anse Lazio and Anse Georgette, both regularly ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the world for their powder-white sand and granite boulder formations.
At the island’s centre lies the Vallée de Mai Nature Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site protecting one of the world’s few remaining stands of primeval palm forest. The reserve is the natural home of the coco de mer, a palm tree producing the largest seed in the plant kingdom, alongside rare endemic birds found nowhere else on Earth.
