The Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino — is a hunting term that outlived its origins, coined for the animals considered most dangerous to approach on foot rather than the most impressive to look at. It survives because it is a useful shorthand, and because seeing all five genuinely takes some doing. Leopard and rhino are the ones that decide whether the list gets completed.
Ngorongoro Crater offers the highest concentration in one place, with black rhino on the crater floor and lion, elephant and buffalo alongside them. The Serengeti delivers leopard in the riverine trees along the Seronera. In southern Africa, the Sabi Sand’s habituated leopards make sightings almost routine, and Kruger holds all five across a vast area.
