This is southern Africa’s classic overture — a city, a waterfall and a river, covered in ten unhurried days across three countries. Four nights in Cape Town open the trip, with the cableway up Table Mountain, the Atlantic seaboard, and enough time to reach the Winelands or the peninsula without compressing the days. It is a rare safari itinerary that begins somewhere you would happily spend a week on its own merits.
From there the journey moves north to Victoria Falls, where the Zambezi drops into a basalt gorge and the spray is visible long before the falls are. The closing nights are spent on the Chobe riverfront, home to the largest elephant population in Africa, where late-afternoon boat cruises put you at water level among the herds. Travel between May and October: the falls still carry good volume, and the dry season pulls Chobe’s elephants down to the river in numbers.

The Winchester Hotel

The Winchester Hotel sits directly on the Sea Point promenade, a Cape Victorian building that has looked out over the Atlantic since the 1920s and remains one of the more characterful addresses on that stretch of coast.
Rooms face either the ocean or a planted internal courtyard, where the hotel’s long-running jazz brunch is held. Sea Point itself is walkable, flat and lively, with the promenade running for kilometres along the shoreline towards Green Point and the stadium.

As you explore Cape Town, it isn’t difficult to see why Table Bay was chosen for the first Dutch settlement in South Africa back in 1652. Sir Francis Drake once referred to this splendid location as “the most stately thing and the fairest cape we saw in the whole circumference of the earth” and even today Cape Town’s setting between the Atlantic waterfront and scenic Table Mountain is absolutely captivating.

Table Mountain’s cableway is a highlight of any visit to Cape Town. You’ll enjoy great views back to the city as the rotating car climbs nerve-rackingly close to the sheer cliffs. It’s even more scenic at the summit, where you can take a short walk, a longer hike, or enjoy a warm drink at a relaxed cafe.

Now a museum, Alcatraz-like Robben Island was a jail for political prisoners prior to 1995. Your guided tour will start with a boat trip across Table Bay, where dolphins and seals might be seen. Once on the island, you’ll visit a cramped cell formerly occupied by Nelson Mandela and a blinding white limestone quarry where inmates did hard labor.

The Royal Livingstone

The Royal Livingstone occupies a stretch of Zambezi riverfront so close to Victoria Falls that guests can walk to the entrance through the hotel’s own grounds, with the spray column visible from the lawns.
The building is deliberately colonial in style, with wide verandas, teak floors and staff in period uniform, and zebra and giraffe graze freely between the buildings. Sundowners are taken on the terrace at the point where the river begins to accelerate towards the drop.
Victoria Falls will leave you spellbound with its scale and majesty: it really is one of the most remarkable natural scenes in Africa. It’s not hard to see why locals call it Mosi-oa-Tunya, or the ‘smoke that thunders’.
You’ll enjoy the Royal Livingstone, which ranks among the few five-star hotels anywhere to boast direct access to one of the seven wonders of the natural world. Situated on the banks of the Zambezi within Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, this luxurious hotel is a short walk (or golf cart ride) away from Victoria Falls, and the leafy grounds attract wildlife such as giraffe, zebra and various antelope.

Chobe Game Lodge is the sole property located within Chobe National Park, occupying a stretch of the Chobe riverfront where Africa’s largest elephant population comes to drink.
Its position inside the park allows game drives to begin before day visitors arrive from Kasane. The lodge is also known for pioneering an all-female professional guiding team, and operates electric game viewers and boats for near-silent wildlife encounters.
You can look forward to a world-class wildlife experience in Chobe National Park. Savuti, which lies within Chobe’s boundaries, is famous for its ferocious lions and leopards, while Chobe Riverfront, close to Kasane, is a wonderful place to see big elephants, big cats, and plenty of action as wildlife comes down to drink by the riverbank.

Beneath a sky of sparkling stars, we head out on a night drive in search of a cast of weird and wonderful creatures seldom seen by day. There are no guarantees, but night drives provide your best chance of locating the elusive likes of leopard, bushpig, serval cat, aardvark and elephant shrew.
