  • The Journey

At Glance

Nineteen days is enough time to stop rushing. This journey works its way south from Nairobi through the flamingo shallows of Lake Nakuru and into the Masai Mara, then crosses into Tanzania for the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater — the two reserves that sit either side of the same ecosystem and the same migration. Because the pace is deliberately relaxed, you stay long enough in each to see it properly: three nights in the Mara rather than one, three in the Serengeti, two on the crater rim.

The last leg changes the trip entirely. A flight from Arusha lands you in the Seychelles, where Praslin’s Vallée de Mai and the granite beaches of Mahé replace early starts and game drives with nothing much at all. It is a long way from the plains, and that is the point — the safari half of this itinerary is demanding in the best sense, and the islands give you somewhere to absorb it before flying home. Best travelled between May and October, when the Mara and Serengeti are at their driest and the herds are moving north.

Designed to complement its natural surroundings, the lodge provides easy access to thrilling game drives, remarkable birdwatching opportunities, and encounters with both black and white rhinos. Whether you’re relaxing beside the heated swimming pool, enjoying panoramic views from your private veranda, or exploring the park’s diverse ecosystems, Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge promises an authentic and memorable safari escape. The lodge offers chalet-style cottages and suites overlooking the lake and surrounding gardens, along with amenities including a heated pool, wellness spa, and family-friendly facilities.

Day 03• Nairobi to Lake Nakuru National Park

You’re in for a real treat when you visit Lake Nakuru National Park. It’s one of the best places anywhere for seeing both black and white rhinos, but there are other highlights as well, including the possibility of seeing lions (some even climb trees here), leopards, flamingos and endangered Rothschild’s giraffes. Rich birdlife, pretty acacia forests, and a towering escarpment overlooking the lake all add to the natural drama.

There’s a real sense of seclusion when you stay at Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge. The lodge sits high in a pretty, tree-filled valley and has excellent facilities.

Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge

  • 24-hour reception
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi
  • Daily housekeeping
  • Laundry service
  • Airstrip transfers
  • Curio shop

Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge sits along a ridge in the central Serengeti, its rooms built as clustered rondavels in a style drawn from traditional African village architecture, each looking out across the plains below.

The central location places it within reach of the Seronera valley, the most reliably game-rich area of the park year-round and particularly strong for lion, leopard and cheetah. An infinity pool on the ridge edge looks straight out over the grassland.

Day 04• Masai Mara National Reserve

We think you’ll love the Masai Mara National Reserve, one of the best places to watch wildlife anywhere in Kenya. You’re almost guaranteed to see plenty of predators, including lions, leopards, cheetahs and spotted hyenas. With so many impalas, zebras, wildebeests, buffaloes and other prey species here, as well as over 500 bird species, you’ll see plenty of safari action. Black rhinos are possible in the Mara Triangle. Also everywhere are elephants, giraffes and hippos, and everyone who visits falls in love with the Masai Mara’s classic safari landscapes.

From high on a prime hilltop location in the central Serengeti, you’ll watch out over some of the best wildlife country anywhere in Africa at the Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge. Your views will be magnificent, and our lodge makes an excellent starting point for exploring the park at any time of the year.

Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge

Perched dramatically on the rim of the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater, Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge offers one of Africa’s most spectacular safari locations. Built into the crater’s edge using natural river stone and covered with indigenous vines, the lodge blends seamlessly into its surroundings while providing uninterrupted panoramic views across the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Inspired by prehistoric rock art and traditional African architecture, the lodge combines authentic character with modern comfort, making it an ideal base for exploring one of Tanzania’s richest wildlife destinations.

Day 10• Walking safari, Ngorongoro Crater

Today you’ll visit Ngorongoro Crater, one of the most beautiful natural sights in Africa, a place where you’ll experience otherworldly beauty with extraordinary wildlife. Watch as, from above, morning mist rolls up and over the crater rim, and notice how the steep walls suggest a place unlike any other. Down below on the crater floor, explore a lost world preserved in a state of pristine isolation, one that shelters lions and hyenas, elephants and black rhinos, flamingos and golden jackals. There are also forests, hippo-filled lakes, a salt pan and hyena dens, and you’ll never lose the sense that you’ve stumbled into a safari theme park where everything’s wild.

You’ll never get tired of going on a walking safari, where you’ll leave behind the vehicle and step out into the wild. It can be a little nerve-wracking at first, but you’ll be walking with an experienced guide and it’s very safe. It can be a real thrill walking in this way, and most people fall in love with the experience.

It is a full-service city hotel rather than a lodge, with conference facilities, a large pool and several restaurants, and its role for most travellers is a comfortable first or last night either side of the drive or flight into the parks.

Day 12• Ngorongoro Crater to Arusha

Spend some time in Arusha, both the gateway city for most safaris in northern Tanzania and a fascinating place to explore. Enjoy good restaurants, streets filled with energy and so many snapshots of vibrant Tanzanian city life. It’s everything you look for in an urban pit stop.
