Eleven days, three countries, and a route that runs from the southern tip of Africa to the Zambezi. It opens in Cape Town with four nights at The Silo — long enough to take the rotating cableway up Table Mountain, drive Chapman’s Peak to Cape Point and the penguin colony at Boulders Beach, and cross Table Bay to Robben Island, where the prison tour is led by men who were held there. The city earns those nights; most itineraries allow it two and regret it.
From there the journey moves north to the Zambezi, where Sanctuary Sussi & Chuma sits on the riverbank inside Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, a short drive from the Zambian side of Victoria Falls and its permanent curtain of spray. The final leg crosses into Botswana for Chobe, home to the largest elephant population in Africa, with game drives on the floodplain and sunset cruises along the riverfront. The pace is deliberately medium — city, falls and big game across three countries, without the punishing back-to-back transfers that usually come with covering this much ground.

The Silo Hotel

The Silo Hotel occupies the upper floors of a 1920s grain elevator on Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront, converted by Thomas Heatherwick in the same project that carved the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa out of the storage tubes below.
Its defining feature is the glazing: bulging, pillowed windows cut into the concrete grid, each pane bowed outward so the rooms catch Table Mountain, the harbour and the Atlantic from different angles. Interiors are deliberately maximalist against the industrial shell, and the rooftop pool and bar look straight across the working docks.

As you explore Cape Town, it isn’t difficult to see why Table Bay was chosen for the first Dutch settlement in South Africa back in 1652. Sir Francis Drake once referred to this splendid location as “the most stately thing and the fairest cape we saw in the whole circumference of the earth” and even today Cape Town’s setting between the Atlantic waterfront and scenic Table Mountain is absolutely captivating.

Now a museum, Alcatraz-like Robben Island was a jail for political prisoners prior to 1995. Your guided tour will start with a boat trip across Table Bay, where dolphins and seals might be seen. Once on the island, you’ll visit a cramped cell formerly occupied by Nelson Mandela and a blinding white limestone quarry where inmates did hard labor.

Sanctuary Sussi & Chuma sits on the banks of the Zambezi inside Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, upstream of Victoria Falls, with twelve stilted treehouse suites linked by raised timber walkways through ebony forest.
The lodge takes its name from David Livingstone’s two companions, who carried his body to the coast after his death. Two private houses sit alongside the main camp, and the river frontage draws elephant, hippo and prolific birdlife within view of the decks.
You won’t regret visiting Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park. This small park is home to the world-famous Victoria Falls, and shares its evocative local name Mosi-oaTunya (‘Smoke that Thunders’). It also incorporates a small but worthwhile game park on the north bank of the Zambezi; wildlife here includes Zambia’s only white rhinos, along with elephants, hippos and a varied selection of aquatic birds.

Chobe Chilwero

Chobe Chilwero sits on a hilltop above the Chobe River near Kasane, its name meaning ‘place of high view’ in the local language, and the outlook across the floodplains is its defining feature.
Private cottages are set within mature gardens, each with its own courtyard. The lodge combines game drives into Chobe National Park with river cruises, and its proximity to the Zimbabwe border makes it a natural pairing with Victoria Falls.
Chobe National Park is often called the Land of the Giants. That’s because not only is the park famous for its big herds of elephants, but these are also some of the biggest elephants in Africa. Big cats, especially lions and leopards are other highlights, and two of Botswana’s most famous wildlife areas, Savuti and Chobe Riverfront, lie within the park’s boundaries.
By staying at Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero, you’re just inside Chobe National Park and you’re well placed to make the most of all that the lodge and its location can offer.

Return to Chobe National Park for more fantastic wildlife action. Beneath a sky of sparkling stars, we head out on a night drive in search of a cast of weird and wonderful creatures seldom seen by day. There are no guarantees, but night drives provide your best chance of locating the elusive likes of leopard, bushpig, serval cat, aardvark and elephant shrew.
